The So. Cal. War Tax Alternative Fund
The Southern California War Tax Alternative Fund (SCWTAF) is made up of money not paid as taxes by people who have refused part or all of federal income and/or telephone excise taxes in opposition to payment for war and in an attempt to redirect spending towards peace and social needs. The Alternative Fund serves in the following ways:
A Holding Account for Unpaid Taxes: The war tax refuser may recover their money from the Fund if the IRS levies wages, accounts, or property, or for any other reason. The interest is used for grants.
Distribution of Interest on the SCWTAF: Fund depositors annually make grants to groups and programs serving peace and human needs. This combines the refusal to support warfare and destruction with a positive statement for funding real human needs. The Fund is held in banks serving underfunded communities.
Confirmation of Sincerity: Many Fund depositors consider it important to inform the public and/or the IRS of their desire to contribute to constructive purposes, but not to war. For these refusers, depositing the “war tax” in the Alternative Fund demonstrates that the refusers are engaged in conscientious war tax resistance, not tax avoidance.
The Fund was founded in 1979, and now holds $50,000 from 30 war tax refusers. As of 2009, the Fund has granted over $60,000 to local and international projects and organizations.
